Internships & Work Experience with LTA
Opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the interactive learning methodology developed and practised over the past 27 years by one of the country's leading exponents.
Learning Through Action methodology has benefited some 250,000 children and young people, as well as many adults, over those years.
Learning Through Action (LTA) is now offering for 2010-11: (i) work-experience opportunities, and (ii) internships (from one day a week, for up to three terms)
TWO DISTINCT STRANDS are available for involvement in the work of this education charity:
Positions will be offered following interview to candidates with at least the basic skill-set of: self-confidence; an ability to interact positively with children, young people and adults; the potential to develop inherent role-play skills.
- LTA teams create and deliver interactive learning workshops for children and young people in primary, secondary and special schools, Pupil Referral Units, Youth Offender Institutions, colleges, and other venues, mainly during school term time.
- These workshops address well-being issues such as bullying (including cyber-bullying), antisocial behaviour, sex and relationship education, knife crime, teenage pregnancy, better nutrition, green issues, “What's Stopping You?”. We also offer 'made-to-order' training workshops for teachers, school governors and the like as well as occasional skills training workshops for the commercial sector.
- LTA workshops are rigorously researched and are highly interactive. We engage participants through role-play (by our team members and by willing participants); simulation; two-way dialogue; small group discussion; questioning in role; and a range of drama strategies.
- All these workshops are delivered by a team of two intensively trained 'gap-year' presenters (one male/one female) led by a highly experienced teacher/facilitator.
- Workshops are delivered in venues mainly across southern central England with occasional tours further afield. We deliver workshops in all Action for Children's residential schools from Kent to South Wales. (Our teams travel to venues using LTA vehicles; necessary accommodation and other travel expenses are borne by LTA .)
- Working with our teams gives a great opportunity for growing personal presentation skills and the ability to think effectively 'on your feet', and the skill to handle challenging and sometimes unpredictable developments. As well as, of course, discovering much about the issues addressed and participants’ attitudes to them. In a year, an LTA team gains experience working in upwards of 150 schools - an invaluable preparation for anyone considering training to teach.
- Potential applicants will be interested to know that LTA, in most years since 1997, has delivered, in partnership with ARCPA (the Arab Centre for Popular Arts) LTA training workshops in Lebanon for NGO workers in Palestinian refugee camps, latterly at the annual Janana Summer Encounter in Broumana. Global politics permitting, if LTA is invited again in 2011, it may be possible for an able intern to be part of the LTA team for this very worthwhile programme.
- This Strand is likely to be of particular interest to people studying or interested in the fields of Business Studies, IT, Accountancy, Management, Marketing or Politics. These are internship roles for from say one day a week, to as much as a term or a yearlong commitment. It is anticipated that internships could be offered in all the above fields and also for help in revamping our website to reflect planned development.
- Discussions are being progressed with Action for Children and senior Welsh Government and Rhondda officials for an LTA satellite team to be based at AfC's residential school in Penarth. This satellite, it is planned, would deliver our well-being workshops, and also our 'Living History' projects, to schools across South Wales as well as being available to AfC Penarth. This extension will demand review and proportionate expansion of LTA’s administrative, promotional and marketing resources.
- LTA seeks to build on the Penarth model to establish locally recruited satellite teams regionally across the UK.
- The aim of the above strategy is to make available the educational benefits of our workshops and projects to as many children and young people as possible. Such exponential growth will make it necessary and possible to expand the charity's resources creating a number of new employment opportunities.
Requests for further information and/or to apply for the above work experience and internship opportunities should be sent by email to Annette Cotterill FRSA, MA (Founder & Executive Director-Trustee) attaching your CV if you wish to apply, and stating whether you are interested in work experience or an internship, the time you are able to commit to and for how long, and which of Strand 1 or 2 appeals to you.
