Workshops for Ages 11 to 18+

Appropriate versions of the workshops outlined below are delivered in secondary Special Schools and Pupil Referral Units, where LTA has extensive experience, as well as, of course, in Comprehensive Schools, Academies and Sixth Form and Further Education Colleges.

"GET YOU!"
This workshop, which begins with a very dramatic monologue that focuses attention on bullying and related issues, also explores gang 'culture', and the carrying of knives and other weapons.

Lively and purposeful responses are stimulated, even from the most ostensibly alienated group. The issues and their context are explored further through other role plays and discussion appropriate to age, often in small groups which will later share their conclusions. When racism or other discriminatory bullying is a particular concern the topic is readily expanded upon within the workshop.

Students think the sessions are "great" and "really worthwhile" – which pleases their teachers, who often learn about a lot that is going on 'behind the scenes' and can be surprised by contributions from usually reticent students.

"IT'S YOUR DECISION!"
This interactive learning workshop focuses on taking responsibility for one's own life-affecting choices.

Myths and misconceptions regarding the effects and the short- and longer-term consequences of alcohol misuse and drug abuse are explored and corrected through role play and discussion, often in small groups.

The comparative emphasis between alcohol and other drugs is agreed beforehand with school staff.

"MAKING CHOICES"
Many teachers have said to us, after observing a session of this highly participatory workshop: "I wish I'd had the benefit of this experience, when I was at school." Which perhaps says all that really needs to be said.

The workshop picks up where most curriculum sex education leaves off. It looks at 'sex ed' in the context of relationships, checks on understanding, corrects misapprehensions. Shoots down myths.

All in the context of the vital importance for everyone of thinking through the issues, considering principles – and then "Making Choices" – right choices, informed choices – for themselves.

"ON THE EDGE"
More than 60,000 knife-related offences a year:
This alarming statistic*, and daily news of teenage knife-related incidents motivated the LTA team to research the subject in depth.

We immediately realised that developing young people's skills in conflict resolution is essential. Not only will this help them to avoid/resolve incidents that may confront them. It will also contribute to fewer young people feeling they need to carry weapons.

The outcome of this study is our latest interactive learning workshop "ON THE EDGE". Following its public launch at The Emmbrook School, Wokingham on June 29th, it is available for booking (initially for Years 9, 10 and 11) by secondary schools, PRUs and YOIs - "first come, first served".

"FRIENDLY EARS"
The introductory workshop, which usually follows the delivery of one or more of our PSHE workshops, shows what peer mentoring seeks to achieve, the strategic options, and the skills and techniques that can be deployed.

On the basis if this experience, attendees decide whether they want to commit to becoming peer mentors. (In our view, self-selection, rather than students being selected by their teachers, is always preferable and more effective.) Follow-up workshops, for trainee peer-mentors, practice the techniques through role play and simulation, and share and review (anonymously) individual peer-mentoring experiences.
